Remember that survey that I posted…oh…about a month ago? Well I finally decided to end it/reveal the astonishing results!
THE GREAT ROLLER VS. TRAINER SURVEY
January 2009 Edition
As a refresher, the question was:
Which form of indoor riding sucks more?
RESULTS:
Trainer: 45 votes
Rollers: 33 votes
So, according to my highly scientific method of data gathering, the trainer sucks more (which was also my opinion).
I also allowed people to provide justification for their answer, and here are some interesting ones.
The majority of the roller-supporters felt that the rollers kept you more engaged while riding:
At least with rollers, there’s the thrill of the chance of falling off and dying……….death by roller. For me at least, rollers make the time past faster. There’s also skill required. And I always think of the photo of that guy riding rollers, no-handed on a fixie while drinking a Miller High Life………..and I think to myself……I wanna be like that guy
This is a good point. This photo is incredible inspiration for all cyclists.
rollers require you to think and concentrate, well at least not think/want to do other things. when im on the trainer i want to be watching something, or be entertained, or eat a large ham and cheese sandwhich and drink a beer. i also get nate miller syndrome on the trainer.
Nate Miller syndrome has afflicted many UNH cyclists. Consult a fellow rider if you find yourself spending four hours in the gym, but thirty minutes actually riding the trainer.
Supporters of the trainer largely noted increased power output, and the taint/ball saving aspects:
because you can only ride them so hard. a trainer, you can pretty much die with a combo of cadence/resistance/gearing. with rollers, unless you have one of those fan resistance thingies, you get lulled into spinning faster and faster… and… then… it’s 4hrs later and your nads have fallen off. on a trainer you’d be dead at hour three. and your nads at 2hrs 30mins. trainers save nads. i have spoken.
Due to my nads hurting, I’ve gotten pretty good at extended standing sessions while on the rollers – so don’t worry, I WILL procreate.
Rollers better for <20 minutes. On rides longer than 20 minutes, the trainer preserves future generations of me.
Unless you have supersperm.

It’s easier to balance your mom on my lap and ride the trainer. We’ve tried on the rollers…crashing while bike sexing is not good.
