Matches
So the analogy of the matchbook is something Ed Spuler brings up frequently on race weekends and at team meetings.
The idea is that everyone starts a race with a certain number of matches. Each time you make a move or effort – an attack, chasing someone down, sitting at the front – you burn up a certain number of matches. When your matches are gone, you’re done.
During the week and on rest days, you replenish your matchbook. Through training, you make the totaly capacity of your matchbook larger.
I’m pretty sure I went into Housatonic with very few matches from a depleted book that has not ever been big enough for the Cat 3’s. This week, however, I’ve spent replenishing my matchbook. I just slept until 9:45, and am about to get a bowl of cereal before riding to Ayla’s (a coffee shop) for a cup of coffee and a toasted scone.
I should go into the Rochester crit with a full, albeit small, matchbook.
Oh, and I want to sell my bike for 900 bucks.
