It’s like finding out Santa is an abusive crack-head
So if you’re into cycling, you already know about this.
And the fact that Astana-Wurth is now out of the tour. And that cycling is now, essentially, a joke.
When it was just the Astana-Wurth team in trouble, I wasn’t so worried. But now that Basso and Ullrich are implicated, I’m worried. I always said that all European pros doped – and from stories I’ve heard second-hand from people I know overseas that seems to be true – but I never thought that it was 100% true. And it seems to be close to 100% true.
Now, I know that everyone is “suspected”, and that they are innocent until proven guilty, but in cycling, suspicion of doping will kill you. I thought that Hamilton would have been proven innocent, and we all know how that went. And reading some of the comments from T-Mobile directors and such, I’m not feeling too good about these guys being found innocent. As their team doesn’t even have any faith in Ullrich.
So, my point is that Basso, who I felt was a great rider, a good person, and someone who should, could, and would win the tour in a fair manner, lied to us all. And that makes me feel cheated and dissapointed in the sport I enjoy so much.
The good news is, though, that no Discovery riders were implicated. Nor were any Americans, besides Hamilton. So maybe there’s hope for professional cycling in the United States. Because it’s looking pretty ugly for cycling in Europe.
